SUMMARY:Milwaukee on Tap: How We Became America's Beer Capital
DESCRIPTION:Good water\, abundant ice\, and a huge German population made Milwaukee a logical center of the brewing trade. Within a single generation the city housed some of the largest brewers in America. Although beer was its most important product for only one year—1890—the “amber nectar” shaped Milwaukee’s character and cemented its image in the national consciousness. Join me for a lively look back at the beverage that made Milwaukee famous.

SUMMARY:Milwaukee: A City Built on Water
DESCRIPTION:Lake Michigan and the rivers that feed it have been Milwaukee’s dominant natural resources since the days of the Potawatomi. Join me for a lively illustrated look at the lake and its adjacent watersheds. See how they served the community as transportation routes\, recreational resources\, and industrial corridors\, and how they have weathered a cycle of heavy use and flagrant abuse to emerge as focal points of both celebration and concern in the twenty-first century.\n The event is a fund-raiser for Bay View Community Center\, on whose board I used to sit. Check out rarely seen items from the Miller collection\, on display this night only\, and toast your evening with a complimentary glass of Miller High Life\, introduced in 1903 and Miller’s lead brand for many years. SUMMARY:Polish Workers and the Eight-Hour Movement of 1886
DESCRIPTION:In 1918 Poland became an independent nation again after more than a century of subjugation to foreign powers. That makes 2018 an important centennial year\, but Poles had already been struggling for a different kind of independence in America. I’ll be talking about their participation in the Eight-Hour movement of 1886\, a watershed development in Milwaukee’s history that ended in both tragedy and hope. The program is free with Polish Fest admission .

SUMMARY:Neighbors and Strangers: The Challenges of Diversity in Milwaukee
DESCRIPTION:Diversity has been one of Milwaukee’s hallmarks since the community’s infancy. A bewildering variety of ethnic communities have emerged here\, including Native Americans and French Canadians before the dawn of urban time; Yankees\, Germans\, Irish\, Poles\, and Italians in the nineteenth century; and Latinos and African Americans in the twentieth. And that’s just the major groups. Each has played a formative role in the making of Milwaukee\, but harmony has not been the dominant theme in their complex coexistence. A pecking order developed early and changed often\, usually in response to the arrival of even newer groups. As in other U.S. cities\, differences became divisions. That pattern persists to the present\, as Milwaukee\, with the rest of America\, works to reconcile the power of diversity with its equally abundant challenges.

SUMMARY:Walker's Point: Milwaukee's Oldest Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:Walker’s Point is known variously as a museum of 19th-century homes\, a colorful entertainment district\, and a vibrant center of Latino culture. It is also the sole survivor of three rival settlements that made up frontier Milwaukee. The area’s distinctive heritage has produced a neighborhood with multiple personalities—all of them fascinating. \nThis lecture will be part of Spaces and Traces\, Historic Milwaukee\, Inc’s. annual showcase of our city’s most fascinating neighborhoods.

SUMMARY:From Rails to Trails: Getting around in Southeast Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukeeans have used any number of transportation modes to get around over the decades\, including ships\, plank roads\, railroads\, automobiles … and bicycles. Enthusiasm for two-wheeled transportation was at a fever pitch in the 1890s\, but bicycles were strictly for kids by the 1950s. Today they’re a vital component of any sound transportation plan. As part of Wheel & Sprocket’s annual Bike Expo\, I’ll discuss how the transition took place and explain how biking in our region is getting better every year. \n‘

SUMMARY:Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Geography matters in Milwaukee. From the very beginning\, rivers and railroads divided the city into distinct “Sides”—North\, South\, East\, and West—with dramatically different characters. Within those districts dozens of smaller communities developed—places like Bay View\, Layton Park\, Pigsville\, Washington Heights\, Rufus King\, Riverwest\, and North Point. The result is a mosaic of small-scale hometowns that make the city both intelligible and approachable. Join local historian John Gurda for a lively illustrated look at the patterns that have made Milwaukee pre-eminently a city of neighborhoods. A book sale and signing will follow the program.

SUMMARY:East Side\, West Side: A History of Milwaukee Neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee’s Jewish community is nearly as old as Milwaukee itself\, with immigrants coming from the German states in the 1840s\, followed by Eastern European Jews in the 1880s. They became part of a city that evolved over the next century to encompass a rich\, varied population. \nUnique characteristics and establishments emerged\, creating institutions and treasured hangouts where diverse communities gathered. While neighborhoods have changed\, traces of those early settlements persist in the local landscape. Join me for a walk through the streets of old Milwaukee\, with an emphasis on Jewish Milwaukee. A book-signing will follow the lecture. \nThe program is offered in conjunction with Moments & Markers: An Adolph Rosenblatt Retrospective. Admission is $5 for members\, $8 for the general public. SUMMARY:Down in the Valley: A Menomonee Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:In the 1700s\, the Menomonee Valley was a sprawling wetland that fed and supplied hundreds of Native American families. In the 1800s\, it was filled in to become the most valuable industrial real estate in Wisconsin. By the late 1900s\, it was a civic embarrassment\, one of the least attractive and most polluted sites in the state. In recent decades the Valley has been utterly transformed to become a center of clean industry\, urban parkland\, and tourist destinations. Join me for a ground-level look at the past and present of a district that has always played a central role in Milwaukee. The program will be held at the historic Milwaukee Gas Light plant as a benefit for the Chudnow Museum of Yesteryear\, and reservations are required.

The series will be rebroadcast in its entirety and then capped with an all-new episode called The Next Chapter. This half-hour update will chronicle a decade of dramatic change as old struggles persist and a new Milwaukee rises. \nJoin the production team and MPTV brass at Best Place for a sneak peak at The Next Chapter. Doors open at 6\, program at 7. Please RSVP. Details at mptv.org.

SUMMARY:A Sudsy Heritage: Milwaukee's Rise as Beer Capital of the World
DESCRIPTION:Join me for a lively look back at the beverage that made Milwaukee famous. Good water\, abundant ice\, and a substantial German population made Milwaukee a logical center of the brewing trade. Within a generation of its founding\, the city housed some of the largest brewers in America. Although beer was its most important product for only one year—1890—the “amber nectar” shaped Milwaukee’s character and cemented its image in the national consciousness. The program is part of MOWA’s “Art on Tap: Early Wisconsin Brewery Art and Advertising\,” an exhibition that runs from July 9 to Sept. 25\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Green Milwaukee: A History of Our Parks and Open Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee County is blessed with 15\,000 acres of public green space—one of the largest holdings in urban America. It wasn’t always that way. On the occasion of Humboldt Park’s 125th birthday\, I’ll be discussing the evolution of our stellar—and much-endangered—park system from the days of tiny public squares and private beer gardens to the abundant challenges of the present.
