SUMMARY:Milwaukee on Tap: How We Became the Beer Capital of the World
DESCRIPTION:Good water\, abundant ice\, and a huge German population made Milwaukee a logical center of the brewing trade. Within a single generation\, the city housed some of the largest brewers in America. Although beer was its most important product for only one year—1890—the “amber nectar” shaped Milwaukee’s character and cemented its image in the national consciousness. Join me for a lively look back at the beverage that made Milwaukee famous in a free program sponsored by the Grafton Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Smokestacks on the Lakefront: The History of Milwaukee's South Shore
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee’s South Shore communities — Walker’s Point\, Bay View\, St. Francis\, Cudahy\, South Milwaukee\, and Oak Creek — are different expressions of the same theme. Just as the North Shore became a zone of affluence rooted in the Yankee Hill neighborhood\, the South Shore became a stronghold of industry — and industrial workers — anchored by a pioneer Bay View iron mill. From hams in Cudahy to mining shovels in South Milwaukee\, it’s all one fascinating story. This free program is sponsored by the St. Francis Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Historic Preservation in Milwaukee
DESCRIPTION:This evening is a benefit for Bay View Community Center\, and what better place to talk about preservation than Bay View? The neighborhood is one of the oldest in Milwaukee\, and\, as in most historic neighborhoods\, its architectural heritage is both cherished and threatened. But I’ll be taking a broader view of Milwaukee’s preservation movement\, chronicling the quest to save the fabric of our community’s past ever since the iconic North Western Railroad depot was reduced to rubble in 1968. The evening will also feature music\, food\, and drinks.

SUMMARY:Made in Milwaukee: The Economic Roots of Brewtown
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee has made its living in a multitude of ways over the last 175 years. Growing from roots in shipping and grain-handling\, the city became a manufacturing powerhouse\, sending its products all over the globe. In recent years\, service industries have claimed a larger place on the economic smorgasbord. From beer to gears and from hides to Harleys\, “Made in Milwaukee” will offer a colorful and enlightening look at the people and products that have made Milwaukee famous. The event will be held in a most appropriate place: Good City’s new location in Century City\, the former A.O. Smith manufacturing complex.

SUMMARY:How the Dells Became the Dells
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with MOWA’s exhibit of Wisconsin Dells photography over the years\, I’ll bring the past and present of this unique landscape together by telling the stories of three decisive figures who put it on the map: Byron Kilbourn\, who built the railroad that made the Dells accessible; H.H. Bennett\, the photographer and promoter who made it a popular destination; and Tommy Bartlett\, who ushered in the modern era and helped to make the Dells a capital of kitsch.

SUMMARY:Milwaukee on Tap: An Evening of Beer History at Lakefront Brewery
DESCRIPTION:In a special session of Lakefront Brewery’s popular Beer Academy\, I’ll tell the story of how Milwaukee became America’s beer capital and of how local brewers have weathered competition\, Prohibition\, and consolidation to make today’s city a capital of the craft movement. Jim Klisch\, Lakefront’s co-founder\, will follow with the the story of his family’s brewery as a craft pioneer\, and then we’ll hear from Beer Academy professors Omega Burckhardt and Aimee Koehler. The evening will also include: \n— a family-style charcuterie board (that’s meat and cheese\, I think) for each table\n— a pint of Lakefront and a shared six-pack of Lakefront brands\n— a souvenir mini-snifter\n— a chance to ask any of us whatever you want \nFor tickets\, go to https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/5337033/milwaukee-on-tap-an-evening-of-beer-history-with-john-gurdapresented-by-the-lakefront-beer-academy-milwaukee-lakefront-brewery

SUMMARY:Prohibition in Milwaukee
DESCRIPTION:As the beer capital of America\, Milwaukee felt the impact of Prohibition more powerfully than most US cities. The long national drought shut down a major industry\, deprived the city of both jobs and tax revenue\, and forced ordinary citizens to the wrong side of the law. The fourteen-year dry spell was by turns destructive\, infuriating\, and hilarious\, and I’ll cover all the dimensions of the “noble experiment” in Brewtown.

SUMMARY:Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Geography matters in Milwaukee. From the very beginning\, rivers and railroads divided the city into distinct “Sides” — North\, South\, East\, and West — with dramatically different characters. Within those districts\, dozens of smaller communities developed — places like Bay View\, Layton Park\, Pigsville\, Washington Heights\, Rufus King\, Riverwest\, and North Point. The result is a mosaic of small-scale hometowns that make the city both intelligible and approachable. Join me for a lively illustrated look at the patterns that have made Milwaukee pre-eminently a city of neighborhoods. This program is part of St. Alphonsus Parish’s Adult Learning Program\, but everyone is welcome. Books will be available for sale and signing after the talk.

SUMMARY:Milwaukee: A City Built on Water
DESCRIPTION:Lake Michigan and the rivers that feed it have been Milwaukee’s dominant natural resources since the days of the Potawatomi. Join me for a lively illustrated look at the lake and its adjacent watersheds. See how they served the community as transportation routes\, recreational resources\, and industrial corridors\, and how they have weathered a cycle of heavy use and flagrant abuse to emerge as focal points of both celebration and concern in the twenty-first century. A book sale and signing will follow the event\, which is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Milwaukee on Tap: How We Became America's Beer Capital
DESCRIPTION:Good water\, abundant ice\, and a huge German population made Milwaukee a logical center of the brewing trade. Within a single generation the city housed some of the largest brewers in America. Although beer was its most important product for only one year—1890—the “amber nectar” shaped Milwaukee’s character and cemented its image in the national consciousness. Join me for a lively look back at the beverage that made Milwaukee famous.

SUMMARY:Polish Workers and the Eight-Hour Movement of 1886
DESCRIPTION:In 1918 Poland became an independent nation again after more than a century of subjugation to foreign powers. That makes 2018 an important centennial year\, but Poles had already been struggling for a different kind of independence in America. I’ll be talking about their participation in the Eight-Hour movement of 1886\, a watershed development in Milwaukee’s history that ended in both tragedy and hope. The program is free with Polish Fest admission .

SUMMARY:Neighbors and Strangers: The Challenges of Diversity in Milwaukee
DESCRIPTION:Diversity has been one of Milwaukee’s hallmarks since the community’s infancy. A bewildering variety of ethnic communities have emerged here\, including Native Americans and French Canadians before the dawn of urban time; Yankees\, Germans\, Irish\, Poles\, and Italians in the nineteenth century; and Latinos and African Americans in the twentieth. And that’s just the major groups. Each has played a formative role in the making of Milwaukee\, but harmony has not been the dominant theme in their complex coexistence. A pecking order developed early and changed often\, usually in response to the arrival of even newer groups. As in other U.S. cities\, differences became divisions. That pattern persists to the present\, as Milwaukee\, with the rest of America\, works to reconcile the power of diversity with its equally abundant challenges.

SUMMARY:Walker's Point: Milwaukee's Oldest Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:Walker’s Point is known variously as a museum of 19th-century homes\, a colorful entertainment district\, and a vibrant center of Latino culture. It is also the sole survivor of three rival settlements that made up frontier Milwaukee. The area’s distinctive heritage has produced a neighborhood with multiple personalities—all of them fascinating. \nThis lecture will be part of Spaces and Traces\, Historic Milwaukee\, Inc’s. annual showcase of our city’s most fascinating neighborhoods.

SUMMARY:From Rails to Trails: Getting around in Southeast Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukeeans have used any number of transportation modes to get around over the decades\, including ships\, plank roads\, railroads\, automobiles … and bicycles. Enthusiasm for two-wheeled transportation was at a fever pitch in the 1890s\, but bicycles were strictly for kids by the 1950s. Today they’re a vital component of any sound transportation plan. As part of Wheel & Sprocket’s annual Bike Expo\, I’ll discuss how the transition took place and explain how biking in our region is getting better every year. \n‘

SUMMARY:Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Geography matters in Milwaukee. From the very beginning\, rivers and railroads divided the city into distinct “Sides”—North\, South\, East\, and West—with dramatically different characters. Within those districts dozens of smaller communities developed—places like Bay View\, Layton Park\, Pigsville\, Washington Heights\, Rufus King\, Riverwest\, and North Point. The result is a mosaic of small-scale hometowns that make the city both intelligible and approachable. Join local historian John Gurda for a lively illustrated look at the patterns that have made Milwaukee pre-eminently a city of neighborhoods. A book sale and signing will follow the program.
